WHAT IS CAMP DISCOVERY?

Rebecca Bahr: Dr. Boiko, it’s wonderful to have you here. Can you start by telling us a
bit about your background and your involvement with AAD Camp Discovery?

Dr. Susan Boiko: Thank you, Rebecca. I’m a board-certified dermatologist with board-certification and career focus in pediatric dermatology. I’ve been a volunteer with the American Academy of Dermatology’s Camp Discovery for six years. It’s a program designed for children with chronic skin conditions, providing them with a unique opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges in a supportive and fun environment. I’m thrilled to be Camp Director, leading the team bringing Camp Discovery to California for the first time.

Rebecca Bahr: That sounds incredible. Can you tell us more about what makes AAD
Camp Discovery so special?

Dr. Susan Boiko: Camp Discovery is special because it offers children with skin
conditions a chance to experience summer camp without the fear of being judged or
misunderstood. Camp is a safe space where campers can be themselves, make
friends, and gain confidence. It’s staffed by dermatologists, nurses, and other medical
professionals who volunteer their time to ensure the campers’ health and well-being.
The camaraderie and support these kids receive are truly life-changing.

Rebecca Bahr: Bringing Camp Discovery to California in July of 2025 is a significant
milestone. What inspired this expansion, and what are your hopes for the first camp in
California?

Dr. Susan Boiko: The expansion to California was inspired by the growing need to
reach more children with chronic skin conditions on the West Coast. We wanted to
provide these children with the same opportunities and experiences that have been so
impactful in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Texas. The goal  for our first camp in California in 2025 is to create a memorable and empowering experience for  campers, fostering a sense of community and resilience they can draw upon  long after camp ends.

Rebecca Bahr:I am so excited about this new Camp in California.  How does Camp Discovery make a difference in the lives of children who attend?

Dr. Susan Boiko: The impact of Camp Discovery on these children is profound. Many of them have never had the opportunity to attend a camp due to their medical conditions. At Camp Discovery, they receive not just medical care but also emotional support. The camp helps them build friendships, gain independence, and improve their self-esteem. Many campers return year after year, and some even come back as counselors, which speaks volumes about the camp's positive influence.

Rebecca Bahr: How can attendees of Lamorinda Beauty and Bubbles and the community support Camp Discovery through this event?

Dr. Susan Boiko: There are several ways attendees and the community can support Camp Discovery. Firstly, participating in the event and or auction and bidding on items is a direct way to contribute. Additionally, spreading the word about Camp Discovery and its mission helps us reach a broader audience. Donations, big or small, make a significant impact. Every dollar raised brings us closer to providing more children with the opportunity to experience the magic of Camp Discovery.
